What to Expect From CAFCASS

As a Father

How to approach your CAFCASS involvement and present yourself effectively.

CAFCASS (Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service) plays a central role in most family court proceedings involving children. Understanding what CAFCASS does and how to engage with it effectively is essential.

What CAFCASS is not

CAFCASS is not on either parent's side. Their job is to advise the court on what is in the best interests of the children. They are experienced professionals who have heard every version of every story. Trying to win your CAFCASS interview by criticising the other parent is almost always counterproductive.

The safeguarding check

When a C100 application is made, CAFCASS carries out an initial safeguarding check on both parents, checking police and social services records. The results are shared with the court before the first hearing.

The CAFCASS interview

The CAFCASS interview is your opportunity to present yourself as a parent rather than a litigant.

  • Focus on your children, their needs, their routines and their relationship with you
  • Be honest, CAFCASS officers are experienced at detecting inconsistency
  • Avoid criticising the other parent, focus on what you want, not what they have done wrong
  • Bring evidence of your involvement: photos, school records, medical appointment records
  • Be calm, engaged and child-focused throughout

Section 7 reports

Where the court needs a more detailed welfare assessment, it will order a Section 7 report. This involves CAFCASS interviewing both parents, the children where appropriate and relevant professionals. The report includes recommendations to the court, which are taken seriously.

How The Separation Companion can help

Preparation for your CAFCASS interview is one of the most valuable things you can do. I can help you understand what CAFCASS is looking for, think through how to present your position effectively and build an evidence base that demonstrates your involvement in your children's lives.
