Finding a way through

No Money

for Divorce

Not having money for full legal fees does not mean the process has to stop. There are real options.

Divorce and separation are already financially destabilising. When you add significant legal fees on top of that, the process can feel completely out of reach. If you are in a position where you have little or no money available for divorce costs, you are not alone and you are not without options.

The court fee

The court fee for a divorce application is currently £593. If your income and savings are below certain thresholds, you may be eligible for a fee remission that reduces or eliminates this. The GOV.UK fee remission checker can tell you whether you qualify.

You do not have to pay solicitor rates throughout

Solicitor representation is not legally required at any stage of the divorce process. A significant and growing proportion of people in England and Wales navigate the process as self-representing parties (litigants in person), handling their own case with practical support alongside them rather than full legal representation.

What you can do without spending a lot

  • Complete the divorce application yourself online through GOV.UK
  • Use free resources from Citizens Advice, Advicenow and GOV.UK to understand the process
  • Download the free guides available through this site to understand the first steps
  • Use mediation, which is often less expensive than court proceedings
  • Get targeted support for specific tasks rather than ongoing representation

Where affordable support makes the difference

There is a significant difference between having no money and having no options. Practical support from The Separation Companion starts at £65 per hour with no minimum commitment. A single focused session on your most pressing concern, whether that is completing Form E, understanding a proposal you have received, or preparing for a hearing, can make a substantial difference to how the process unfolds.

If cost is a real concern, please mention it when you get in touch. I will always do my best to find a way to help.
