Keeping costs under control

How to Reduce the

Cost of Divorce

Divorce can be expensive. It does not have to be as expensive as many people fear.

The cost of divorce and separation in England and Wales varies enormously depending on how much conflict there is, how complex the financial arrangements are and how much solicitor time is involved. For a relatively straightforward, amicable divorce with limited assets, costs can be kept modest. For a contested financial remedy case with both parties heavily lawyered up, costs can run into tens of thousands of pounds.

Most people's situations sit somewhere in between, and there is a great deal that can be done to keep costs proportionate without compromising on getting a fair outcome.

The biggest driver of cost: solicitor involvement

Solicitor hourly rates for family matters typically range from £150 to £400 or more depending on the firm and location. In contested proceedings, costs accumulate quickly. Every letter, every phone call, every court application adds up. The single biggest way to reduce the cost of divorce is to reduce the amount of time you are paying for at solicitor rates.

Practical ways to reduce costs

  • Handle as much of the process yourself as possible with proper practical support alongside you
  • Use mediation to reach agreements before they become contested court proceedings
  • Keep communication with the other party calm and constructive to reduce unnecessary correspondence
  • If you do use a solicitor, prepare thoroughly before each appointment so you use their time efficiently
  • Understand each stage of the process so you are not paying for explanations
  • Get financial disclosure right first time so you do not need to go back and redo it
  • Use a McKenzie Friend for court attendance rather than a solicitor where possible

Where I fit in

I am not a solicitor and do not charge solicitor rates. I offer practical, organised support to help you navigate as much of the process as possible yourself, do it properly, and use any solicitor time you do need as efficiently as possible. For many people, this approach significantly reduces overall costs while still achieving a fair, properly documented outcome.
