Life After Divorce

The practical steps, and the realistic expectations, for life after divorce.

The end of divorce proceedings does not mean the end of adjustment. For most people, rebuilding life after divorce takes time, often more time than they expected. But there are practical steps you can take, from the moment the process is concluded, to start building the next chapter.

Sort out the practical matters

In the weeks following a final settlement, make sure the practical details are in order:

  • Property transfer or sale completed
  • Pension sharing order implemented
  • All joint accounts closed or transferred
  • Will updated, your existing will may be affected by divorce
  • Name change processed (if applicable)
  • Insurance policies, pensions and nominated beneficiaries updated

Give yourself time

There is no timeline for how long it takes to feel like yourself again. Some people feel relief almost immediately; others go through a prolonged period of grief even after a difficult marriage. Both responses are normal.

Rebuild your support network

Separation can change friendships as well as family relationships. Some friendships will have become strained or ended. Rebuilding your social life, on your own terms, takes time and intention.

Focus on the children

If you have children, maintaining stable, child-focused co-parenting arrangements is the best thing you can do for them, and for yourself. Children who see their parents managing respectfully make a better adjustment than those caught in ongoing conflict.
